Early Childhood Care & Education

Early Childhood Care & Education – QQI 5M2009

Course Duration: One Year – QQI Level 5

Do you like children? Could you see yourself having a career working with them?

Are you curious as to why children do particular things at particular times?

Then this is the course for you. Early Childhood Care and Education will give you the necessary skills to pursue a career as a professional Childcare worker.  From December 2016 there will be a legal requirement for those working in the Early Years sector to have a recognised and appropriate childcare qualification from attending a Childcare Course.  A major award at Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications is necessary for those wishing to work in the sector in any capacity.

The focus of the course is the study of play, development and learning in children from birth to six years old in a socio-cultural context and the implications of this for practice in early childhood settings. A range of local and international perspectives are taken including: children’s rights, children’s health and well-being, pedagogical and curriculum approaches, diversity and inclusion. The course therefore draws on a range of disciplines such as psychology, sociology and social policy, education and health. The course emphasises the links between theory and practice and highly values the development of professional as well as academic skills and knowledge.
